TV and film production is booming in Canada.

Provinces like British Columbia, Quebec, Ontario, and Alberta have brought in the most filming production volume for Canada. This means thousands of jobs are created, more fun exciting entertainment on our screens, and the best part is the filming locations of our favorite actors are on our doorstep!

According to the Canadian Media Producers Association and their “2019 Economic Report On The Screen-Based Media Production Industry In Canada”.

Canada has generated $8.3 billion in total for TV and film production volume.
British Columbia Surpassed Ontario with $2.99 billion vs Ontario’s $2.97 billion, Quebec took the third spot with $1.75 billion, and Alberta with $308 Million.

Pretty cool right?

I’ll be going over with you some amazing Alberta filming locations that happen to be on some of our favorite hikes, you can walk the red carpet on your own and be right on set of your favorite movies.

  1. Elbow Falls - The Bourne Legacy

Right In the opening scene, a shirtless Jeremy Renner jumping into a freezing river. All I could think is wow, is this man crazy? I mean Jeremy Renner is getting paid millions to do this but holy cow does it ever look cool.

My Favorite hikes in this area: Prairie Mountain, Powder Face Ridge,

2. Horsethief Canyon - Ghostbusters afterlife

People are freaking out over the new Ghostbusters trailer where most of Drumheller and the surrounding area were spotted. Horshoe canyon is visable right in the first scene of this trailer. Who’s excited to see the next instalment coming June 21st 2021?

My Favorite hikes in this area:  Horseshoe Canyon, Hoodoos Trail.

3. Spray Lakes - The Revenant and Hold the dark

Spray lakes scores a 10/10 on the breathtaking scale and Leonardo Di Caprio makes it 20/10 add an oscar-winning performance and I’ll probably lose count. Another bonus was a surprisingly a cool Netflix special called Hold the Dark. I stumbled upon this gem on a late lazy saturday night with a serendipitous discovery of seeing some familiar scenery!

My Favorite hikes in this area: Mt. Lougheed, Little Lougheed, Tent Ridge, Reads Tower, Mt. Sparrowhawk, Mt. Nestor, Goat Mountain, Goat Glacier, Wind Tower, Rimwall, West Wind Pass, Wind Mountain, Three Sisters and many many more.

4. Upper Kananaskis lake - Brokeback Mountain.

I was rewatching the Dark Knight recently and seeing Heath Ledger’s legendary performance as the joker (the best joker of all time btw) and seeing him reminded me of how great an actor he was. 2005 blessed us with the release of Brokeback Mountain and shows how much 15 years of can change yet the backdrop still remains the same! The Upper Kananaskis lake remains untouched and kept all of its beauty!

My Favorite hikes in this area: Rawson lake - Sarrail Ridge, Mt. Indefatigble, The Turret, Mt. Fox, Mt. Sarrail, Northover Ridge, Hidden Lake, Aster Lake, Mt. Foch.

5. Fortress Mountain: Inception, Jumanji II and The Revenant.

Leonardo Di Caprio yet again makes another appearance on this list and this mountain in two different films! I hope you’ve been keeping score from the 3rd post above…

I was also happy to see Jumanji’s new installment taking place at fortress mountain AND Elbow falls, all of these movie appearances seem to have chosen a very cold winter setting. This reinforces my argument of why hiking in the wintertime is the most beautiful time to go because if Hollywood loves it then it really must be that great!

I hope you guys enjoy some of these clips.

Hikes in the area: Mt. Chester, Chester Lake, Mt. James Walker, Mt. Galatea, Mt Lawson, Little Lawson.
